Marie Attanasio ’65 /distinguished-graduates/2020/05/16/marie-attanasio/ /distinguished-graduates/2020/05/16/marie-attanasio/#respond Sat, 16 May 2020 18:06:31 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/distinguished-graduates/?p=194 Marie Attanasio received her bachelor’s degree In English from ǿ޴ý College. She was a teacher of English, first at Cranford High School, in Cranford, NJ and then at Montclair High School in Montclair, NJ.  She retired from secondary school teaching after a total of 25 years. Time between these positions was devoted to raising a son, Joseph, and the family pet whippets. Part time positions for 14 years included working as an E.S.L. and basic skills instructor in the adult education program at ǿ޴ý College as well as in private industry.

While at Montclair High School, she played a role in establishing the ninth grade World Literature Course which became a model for introducing young students to a variety of cultures and their literature.  Ms. Attanasio was one of the original team of teachers in the World Literature course embracing its diversity and inclusion principles and challenges. As senior most teacher in the program she was sought after to mentor a number of the ninth-grade English teachers. A strong advocate of inclusion in education, she welcomed special needs students into her classroom. Together, the heterogeneous group of students participated in all aspects of class work and discussions.

Ms. Attanasio is the recipient of several honors:  Who’s Who Among American Teachers (multiple awards), the Josh and Judy Weston Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Student Coalition Faculty Award for Extraordinary Dedication to Montclair High School.

Joseph S. Attanasio is emeritus professor of speech-language pathology in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at ǿ޴ý University.  Dr. Attanasio received his bachelor’s degree in history (social studies) and his master’s degree in speech-language pathology from ǿ޴ý College.  His PhD in speech-language pathology is from New York University.

Dr. Attanasio joined the faculty in the Department of Communication Sciences in 1966 (then the Speech Department) and retired in 2011. While teaching was his primary focus, he served as department chair and chair of the task forces on the New Student Experience, the Outcomes Assessment Program, and the Outcomes Assessment Coordinating Committee.  For a time, Dr. Attanasio served as interim assistant dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and as director of the New Faculty Program.

Dr. Attanasio has published on stuttering in American and Australian journals and has written, as author or co-author, chapters in several books on the subject.  With Dr. Ann Packman, his colleague in Australia, he has published the book, Theoretical Issues In Stuttering, which is in its 2nd edition. He has presented on stuttering at professional conferences in the United States, Europe, and Australia. He has published on statistics and research design in communication disorders. The study of history, initially as an undergraduate and afterward as a continuing interest, has informed his teaching and research.

Dr. Attanasio received ǿ޴ý College’s Alumni Citation and Outstanding Faculty Awards. He was made an honorary research associate of the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Australian Stuttering Research Centre, the University of Sydney, Australia.

Steven M. Resnick, Esq. graduated from ǿ޴ý in 1993 with a BA in English/Pre-Law. He is a partner at Ziegler, Zemsky & Resnick, is a matrimonial and family lawyer and one of New Jersey’s trailblazing practitioners in the area of parental alienation.

A highly skilled litigator, Resnick handles all aspects of matrimonial and family law relating to divorce, equitable distribution, palimony, annulment, high net worth, pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, business valuations, real estate, domestic violence, custody and visitation, paternity, estate/will contests, judgment/agreement modification, appeals, and case second opinions, among others. He has also served as co-counsel for numerous out-of-state matters.

Resnick recently broke new legal ground in New Jersey on the subject of parental alienation and has argued before the Appellate Division of New Jersey and New Jersey Supreme Court on many other matrimonial and family law issues, as well.

Background

Resnick began his legal career immediately following law school serving as law clerk to the Honorable Jo-Anne B. Spatola in New Jersey Superior Court, Family Part. He also held the highly esteemed position of adjunct professor at ǿ޴ý University where he taught Family Law and Legal Writing.

While a law student, Resnick served as interns to both the Honorable Ralph Deluccia and the Honorable Catherine Langlois in the Family Part of New Jersey Superior Court.

In 2005, Resnick was appointed to the District VB Ethics Committee, Office of Attorney Ethics of the Supreme Court of New Jersey and served one term. No stranger to public service, he also served as a volunteer attorney for the Jersey Battered Women’s Service (JWBS), Inc., Morris County, New Jersey, representing victims of domestic violence.

Before joining Ziegler, Zemsky & Resnick in 2015, Resnick was a partner with the firm of Budd Larner, P.C. in its Short Hills, New Jersey, office.

Previously, she spent 13 years with the IBM Corp. in various sales and marketing management positions, including an assignment at IBM’s Asia Pacific headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. Wendy is also President and CEO of the Capdevilla Gillespie Foundation and is involved in the San Diego business and philanthropic communities. She currently serves on several boards, including the La Jolla Playhouse, Pacific Arts Movement, National Council for the American Theater, Strategic Roundtable of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, The U.S. District Export Council and the University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education Sciences. As a young immigrant from the United Kingdom, Wendy is committed to making a difference in our diverse communities.

Wendy has found recent success as a N.Y. Broadway producer. Her current production, Come from Away, which premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse, received seven Tony Award nominations, with Chris Ashley winning “Best Musical Director.” Her first production, , made its debut at the Old Globe in 2012 and premiered on Broadway in 2015-16. Diana and Working Girl are currently in development.

She was recently inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame, received the Junior Achievement Worldwide Gold Leadership Award, and has been recognized as a San Diego Woman Who Means Business, Girl Scouts Cool Woman, YWCA TWIN (Tribute to Women in Industry) and in 2016 received the UPAC (Union Pan Asian Communities) Visionary Award and the JACL (Japanese American Citizens League) Civil Rights Leadership Award for her work with Allegiance.

Wendy has been a dedicated supporter of Junior Achievement San Diego for the past 20 years, with 15 years of service on the Board. Wendy and her husband, Marty Capdevilla, played a key role in finding a new home for the Junior Achievement office, creating the Capdevilla Gillespie Center for Junior Achievement in Mission Valley in 2006. JA’s new home lead to the creation of the , a 10,000-square-foot mini-city where 16,000 fifth graders each year discover how to start and run a profitable business. Wendy was also part of the leadership team that successfully opened JA’s newest experiential learning center, Mission Fed JA Finance Park in 2015. She considers JA Finance Park and JA BizTown her proudest achievements and living legacy for San Diego’s youth.

Wendy is a charter member of the San Diego Women’s Foundation and the San Diego World Trade Center, where she served on the Board for 15 years.

Angelo J. Genova is a Chairman and Managing Partner of Genova Burns LLC. He is a leading member of the New Jersey Bar in the practice areas of labor and employment law, election law and complex litigation and appeals.

As a labor lawyer, Genova has represented management before the National Labor Relations Board and the New Jersey Public Employment Commission in traditional labor and employment matters in both the private and public sectors. Genova has served four New Jersey Governors (Florio, McGreevey, Codey and Corzine) as the state’s labor negotiator with the unions, representing more than 50,000 public workers. He has participated as defense counsel in employment litigation, discrimination, whistle-blower and wrongful termination trials and appeals. His representation in election law has included appearances on behalf of candidates for public office for the offices of State Assembly, City Council, Mayor, County Executive, State Senate and United States Senate.

Genova is a Fellow of The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He served two terms as chair of the Section on Labor and Employment Law of the New Jersey State Bar Association. He is the co-author of “In the Election of 2002: The Voters of New Jersey Were the Winners,” which appeared in the Seton Hall Legislative Journal in 2002. He frequently lectures on election law and election law financing matters and is a regular commentator on such matters on television and in the print media.

Genova graduated from ǿ޴ý College in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He continued his education at Rutgers University School of Law where he earned a Juris Doctor in 1978. He has remained an active alumnus and is a current member of the ǿ޴ý University Foundation Board of Trustees. He also is a recent recipient of ǿ޴ý University’s Carpe Diem Award.

Prior to his appointment as CEO of the company, Tavakoli was chairman of Ambac’s Board of Directors. Among his professional activities, Tavakoli is a director and litigation trustee of MF Global Holdings, where he is pursuing claims against former management and others in connection with recovery of losses incurred at that company.

Tavakoli founded EagleRock Capital Management, LLC, a private investment partnership, in 2002. Prior to that he managed substantial investment portfolios with Odyssey Partners and Highbridge Capital Management, also private investment partnerships. During his 25-year investment career, Tavakoli has made investments across numerous industries, including significant investments in financial services companies. Tavakoli began his professional career as an attorney with the law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley and McCloy, where he primarily represented institutional clients in banking, litigation and corporate restructuring matters.

Tavakoli is a director of Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation, a Korea-based manufacturer of analogue and mixed-signal semiconductors. Until 2014, he served as chairman of the board of Peak Hotels & Resorts Group, a privately held company that owns and manages the Aman Group of Resorts. Until its sale to AT&T in 2013, Tavakoli was a director of Nextwave Wireless Inc., a wireless technology company.

Tavakoli is a Governance Leadership Fellow of the National Association of Corporate Directors. He is involved with a number of not-for-profit organizations, including Little Kids Rock, Stand and Deliver, the Princess Grace Foundation and the Challenged Athletes Foundation. He has previously served as a member on the board of the Montclair Art Museum and the Montclair Film Festival, which he co-founded.

Tavakoli graduated from ǿ޴ý College in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He continued his education at Rutgers University School of Law where he earned a Juris Doctor in 1983. He has remained an active alumnus and is a former chair and current member of the ǿ޴ý University Foundation Board of Trustees.

He continued his education at Seton Hall University School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1984. After serving as the judicial law clerk to the Honorable John J. Geronimo, he became associated with the Newark firm of Mattson, Madden & Polito. In 1987, Wertheim became a staff attorney with Volvo Cars of North America, and in 1995, he rose to the position of deputy general counsel. In 2001, he became vice president and general counsel of Ferrari North America, the distributor of the world-renowned Ferrari automobiles in the Americas.

Wertheim has remained an active alumnus, having served on the board of the Alumni Association for many years, and in 2006, was presented with the Carpe Diem Award by President Susan A. Cole.

She is also a member of the Governor’s Higher Education Council (New Jersey).   She was formerly a member of the Board of Directors and senior vice president and general counsel of Ingersoll-Rand, PLC, a global equipment manufacturer. She also served on the Ingersoll-Rand Executive Committee. Nachtigal is a past vice chair and member of the Board of Governors of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She also is a former chair and member of the Rutgers University Board of Trustees and a former Overseer of the University. She is currently a Rutgers Trustee Emerita.

Nachtigal is a 1968 graduate of ǿ޴ý University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and holds a Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers University School of Law and a Master of Laws degree from New York University.

Following graduation from Harvard Law School and prior to joining Prudential, she was an associate attorney at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP in New York City, where she handled everything from security offerings and leveraged bank financing to mergers and acquisitions, including the AOL-Time Warner merger, the Dex-Media financing and Lucent’s spin-offs, Avaya and Agere Systems.

Smith received a BA, summa cum laude, in political science with a minor in pre-law studies from ǿ޴ý in 1994 and a JD from Harvard Law School in 1998. While at ǿ޴ý, she was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and awarded a Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship. Additional campus activities included leadership roles in The Conservation Club, the ǿ޴ý Paper Recycling Program and Greenpeace. She also received the University’s Woman of the Year award. At Harvard University, she was a senior technical editor of the Environmental Law Review and a pre-law tutor at one of Harvard’s undergraduate houses.
