Summer 2023 Projects /facilities/2023/09/06/summer-2023-projects/ /facilities/2023/09/06/summer-2023-projects/#respond Wed, 06 Sep 2023 15:55:33 +0000 /facilities/?p=210160 Our University Facilities’ Capital Planning and Project Management team has been busy on campus over the summer! As you walk the Montclair campus, you may notice some of the improvements our team has made to make the campus even more beautiful for our students, faculty, staff, visitors and families.

Some of the projects we have been working on are:

  • What’s all that scaffolding in the Village? We are rehabilitating the stucco facade, washing, and repainting at Williams Hall. This is Phase 1 of a four-year project that will address all buildings in The Village.
  • Yogi Berra Stadium – we are in the process of replacing the field surface with synthetic turf, performing miscellaneous improvements to the field, renovations to the locker rooms, and construction of new bullpens and batting cages. Improvements will be completed by the start of baseball season 2024.
  • Panzer Gym Drainage Improvements – Excavation of the previous drain system and the installation of a new storm drain system on the North & West sides of the Panzer building have been completed. This update will prevent the repeated outdoor flooding.
  • Stone Hall Improvements
    • New Sewer line for lobby bathroom – this project included the excavation and installation of a new underground sanitary discharge pipe to serve the Stone Hall lobby bathroom. The existing pipe was deteriorated and no longer functional.
    • Installation of two new rooftop HVAC units designed to provide conditioned fresh air and exhaust to the four gang-style bathrooms/showers.
    • Bathroom floor drainage in the Annex – we added linear floor drains immediately in front of the showers in the two annex bathrooms to prevent water migration into the room and hallway. We have also repaired and replaced two clogged floor drains.

The new sustainable ice makers reduce our use of water by millions of gallons of water per year, and will reduce the amount of sewer water that the University is sending to the water treatment plant.
  • Sprague Library
    • Study Pods – Three new freestanding group study pods have been installed in the library. Two on the 1st floor in Research & Reference Services and one on the 2nd floor. New AV and furniture have also been installed.
    • Wayfinding SignageNew building directory maps have been installed in key locations within the library, and digital directory maps have been placed on screens throughout the library. A QR code on the maps links users to the web version for help navigating through the library via their mobile device. In addition, some key spaces have been highlighted with painted accents to help users navigate the building. Access Services, Research & Reference Services and Commuter Study have been highlighted so far. There are plans to carry this wayfinding and branding throughout the building in the coming year.

The program was developed as part of the Red Hawk Restart in accordance with Governor Murphy’s phased approach to reopening.

  • Sign types include wall-mounted signage, pedestal signage, sandwich boards, stickers to denote properly-distanced seating and furniture layouts, directional floor arrows, “hawk’s feet” floor decals for queuing, and restroom decals
  • Each sign type, message, and location was carefully considered with input from building tenants. Signage is designed to be visible, concise, and universal. Signs serve as general reminders as well as wayfinding guides that keep users safe with minimal disruption to traffic flow.
  • The team also managed and oversaw the campus-wide installation of plexiglass shield stands for classrooms, offices, and reception spaces
  • The team assessed all campus learning spaces and redesigned furniture layouts to allow for proper social distancing between students and faculty.
  • Each building floor and classroom space has a detailed set of signage reference plans noting proper locations of all signs, stickers, and shields across campus that we continue to keep up-to-date.
  • Team members continue to perform daily building audits to field verify signage plans, replace any missing signs or shields, and ensure the highest level of customer service to all end users.

ǿ޴ý Observes Fire Prevention Week with Student-Centered Activities /facilities/2018/10/17/montclair-state-observes-fire-prevention-week-with-student-centered-activities/ /facilities/2018/10/17/montclair-state-observes-fire-prevention-week-with-student-centered-activities/#respond Wed, 17 Oct 2018 14:46:32 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/facilities/?p=206742 From October 7-13, 2018, the Office of Fire Safety conducted its annual observance of National Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme “Look. Listen. Learn. Be Aware. Fire Can Happen Anywhere.” inspired an array of student-centered activities including the inaugural Fire Prevention Week program, a meet and greet during the Homecoming bonfire, which allowed students to interact with the ǿ޴ý Fire Safety team and members of the Little Falls Fire Department.

Additional Fire Prevention Week activities included Fire Prevention Campfire Night in the Russ/Freeman neighborhood, which provided the campus community with the opportunity to learn proper fire extinguisher use. Participants were treated to a special guest appearance from ǿ޴ý’s own Rocky the Red Hawk, who was the first participant in the fire extinguisher training and was able to impressively put out a fire in five seconds.

Later in the week, the Little Falls Fire Department and ǿ޴ý Fire Safety Specialist John D. Keane visited the children and staff of the Ben Samuels Children’s Center. The children were excited to be shown the apparatus and the tools of the firefighter’s trade within Little Falls Company 4’s 125-foot Ladder Truck. Through informational programs and training, the Office of Fire Safety aims to inspire and educate all members of the campus community about the importance of fire safety. National Fire Prevention Week provides the University with the opportunity to raise awareness about fire safety issues during a concentrated and memorable time for everyone involved. We are confident that ǿ޴ý University students and staff will continue to view education related to fire and life safety in the highest regard and we look forward to planning informative community awareness programs for future activities.
