Broadly, they ask, what are the correlations between market data and democracy?<\/p>\n<p><strong>When:<\/strong> March 18, 2021<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time:<\/strong> 7:00pm<\/p>\n<span class=\"prpl-button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/montclair.zoom.us\/meeting\/register\/tZcqf-qqqTwtGtSMIt3biab7VnbEiudsMbmB\">Register Here<\/a><\/span>\n<p><strong>Panelists:<\/strong> This panel of economists, working both inside and outside of academia, will focus on the tensions between long-range planning and the frequent need to improvise choices given the vagaries of life.\u00a0 Broadly, they ask, how does the economy and democracy work toward and against each other?\u00a0 <span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Jim Leitner, President of Falcon Management<\/strong>, and <strong>Scott Axelrod, Director of Research at Falcon Management<\/strong>, from the vantage point of the private sector, will speak about the V-Dem Project democracy indicators and market behavior. \u00a0\u201cVarieties of Democracy (V-Dem) is a new approach to conceptualizing and measuring democracy. We provide a multidimensional and disaggregated dataset that reflects the complexity of the concept of democracy as a system of rule that goes beyond the simple presence of elections. The V-Dem project distinguishes between five high-level principles of democracy: electoral, liberal, participatory, deliberative, and egalitarian, and collects data to measure these principles.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.v-dem.net\/en\/\">V-Dem<\/a>). <strong>David Axelrod, Department of Economics<\/strong>, will speak on his analysis of the role of time and spirit in economics and decision-making.\u00a0 <strong>Luis Portes, Department of Economics<\/strong>, will speak on democracy and the distinction between a market economy and capitalism.
