Seek advice from multiple members of the faculty and from other doctoral students. You have the option to make changes to this committee prior to formalizing your committee at the proposal stage.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-step\"><div class=\"prpl-step-number\"><span class=\"label-part\">Step<\/span> <span class=\"number-part\">3<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-step-content\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Comprehensive Experience<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<ol>\n<li>Candidate receives\u00a0<strong>integrative essay<\/strong> prompts from committee chair and has three weeks to complete two integrative essays.<\/li>\n<li>Candidate submits responses to the integrative essays to their entire committee. The committee has two weeks to review the integrative essays. A day is set for a committee meeting with the student to defend the integrative essays. Committee members pass or fail the candidate, notifying them immediately of the decision.<\/li>\n<li>If the candidate passes, they reach candidacy and can begin work on the <strong>literature review<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Notes and Resources:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the candidate fails the qualifying experience, they may attempt it one additional time.<\/li>\n<li>Complete coursework &#8211; run a model audit to make sure that you&#8217;re not missing any classes.<\/li>\n<li>Pass comprehensive exams and submit <a href=\"\/graduate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2020\/08\/Form-A.pdf\">Form A &#8211; Notification of Completion of the Qualifying Assessment and Notification of Admission to Doctoral Candidacy (PDF)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-step\"><div class=\"prpl-step-number\"><span class=\"label-part\">Step<\/span> <span class=\"number-part\">4<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-step-content\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Literature Review<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p class=\"normal\">Candidate conducts a review of the literature related to a particular topic in mathematics education and then synthesizes that review to produce a critical analysis of the relevant literature. The candidate should choose a topic related to their potential dissertation topic. Although the work prepared for the literature review may become the basis of the candidate\u2019s dissertation, it should be distinguished from the proposal stage, where the candidate presents their research questions and research design. The candidate is encouraged to conclude their literature review by highlighting gaps in the extant literature and using the literature to propose future directions of research in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\">The literature review must explicitly address the following overarching questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What theories and methodologies have researchers used to study your topic? How have these theories evolved through the history of mathematics education? Are these theories compatible or incompatible?<\/li>\n<li>What are the seminal works? What are key findings from these and other papers on the topic and how have researchers used these findings to further study the topic? If key findings have not supported further research describe possible reasons for this.<\/li>\n<li>What are the gaps in the current literature and areas for further study?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Notes and Resources:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"normal\">For all stages of the dissertation, candidates are encouraged to expect at least two weeks for faculty members to provide feedback.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">When all committee members agree that the literature review is ready to discuss, set a date for a formal discussion with the committee.<\/li>\n<li>The MSU Library has a Research Guide about Literature Reviews <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/montclair.libguides.com\/literature-reviews\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. The University of Minnesota&#8217;s Library has <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.umn.edu\/instruction\/literaturereview\/story_html5.html\">a web-based tutorial<\/a>, as well.<\/li>\n<li>Graduate School Resources for writing your dissertation can be found <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/graduate-students\/doctoral-students\/?\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. We recommend that you write your proposal using a dissertation template and a citation manager.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-step\"><div class=\"prpl-step-number\"><span class=\"label-part\">Step<\/span> <span class=\"number-part\">5<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-step-content\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Dissertation Proposal<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<ul>\n<li>If changes are being made to the composition of the committee, now is the time to do so. Once it&#8217;s final, formalize that committee by submitting <a href=\"\/graduate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2020\/08\/From-B.pdf\">Form B &#8211; Approval of Dissertation Committee (PDF)<\/a>.\u00a0If any proposed committee members are external to the university, also submit\u00a0<a href=\"\/graduate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2020\/08\/Form-C.pdf\" class=\"\">Form C \u2013 Request for Approval of Outside Dissertation Committee Member<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Enroll in <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/gradschool.montclair.edu\/gradweb\/forms\/dissertation.php\" target=\"_blank\">Dissertation Advisement (MATH 900)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Begin IRB application &#8211; attend a workshop and complete a tutorial prior to applying.<\/li>\n<li>At some point during the development of your proposal, have a preliminary conversation with your chair about the potential format of your dissertation: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the two options are the conventional 5-chapter dissertation and the 3-article-based dissertation<\/span>. The templates for these formats are on the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/mathematics-education-phd\/forms-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\">Forms and Resources<\/a> page along with Math Ed-specific guidelines for the articles-based dissertation. This decision should be integrated into your proposal.
