Host: The Committee for Just and Sustainable Practices: The AI Working Group
Location: Cohen Lounge, Dickson Hall 178
Description: The University Senate’s Committee for Just and Sustainable Practices and Generative AI Committee are holding a series of open discussions dealing with AI from various perspectives. Each discussion is intended to provide insight into key aspects of AI that need to be considered in university, college and individual decision making. This second meeting will focus on the environmental cost of AI creation and use. Topics will include: The impact of mining of rare earth elements on already vulnerable communities, the damage to ecosystems created by data centers’ heavy use of water and release of contaminated water back into rivers and streams, and the climate consequences of increasing energy use. The essential question is how the university can limit the environmental damage created by AI and how it can work to mitigate damage that has already been done.
